Making & weaving Malawi chairs is a long labour intensive process that takes months of planning. The Tiliaceae shrub is used as jute for the weaving of the chairs. The shrub grows in the summer months & the long roots are harvested, coiled and dried.In the winter months, there is no material available to weave these chairs, therefore weaving is limited to about 8 months of the year.Reed from the river is also incorporated into the manufacturing process. These chairs are extremely hard wearing and strong. The natural chairs can be washed with soapy water and rinsed thoroughly – but drying quickly is essential, as it is an organic product and must not stay damp for long periods of time.
